Calculate a tip and split the bill

A tip calculator divides the full bill among diners after adding a selected gratuity percentage.

Calculation method

Tip = bill × tip rate / 100. Total = bill + tip. Amount per person = total ÷ number of people.

Worked example

On an $80 bill with 20% tip, the gratuity is $16 and total is $96. Split four ways, that is $24 each.

What your result means

Some receipts apply tips before tax; others suggest a percentage after tax. Choose the base that matches your preference and local practice.

Tips for better calculations

Check the party-size value before using Split; it must be a positive whole number.

Assumptions and limitations

An included service charge or automatic gratuity may already be on the bill. Adjustments for unequal ordering or cash rounding are not modeled.
