Add sales tax to a subtotal

Sales tax is usually calculated as a share of the taxable purchase amount. Use the local combined tax rate applicable to the item and location.

Calculation method

Tax = taxable subtotal × rate / 100. Total = subtotal + tax.

Worked example

A $50 taxable purchase at 8% sales tax adds $4 tax, for a $54 total.

What your result means

State and local sales taxes can differ across neighboring jurisdictions, and some product categories are exempt or taxed differently.

Tips for better calculations

Confirm the rate on your receipt or local government website instead of assuming a single national rate.

Assumptions and limitations

This calculator does not look up local tax rates or determine exemptions. Rounding practices may differ when each line item is taxed individually.
